X Post claims Railways earned Rs 2110 crore in one year from ticket cancellation

Viral Post: A post is going viral very fast on social media. It has been claimed that Indian Railways earned Rs 2110 crore from ticket cancellation in the year 2022-23. According to reports, this information has been given in a reply to Indu Bhal Tiwari under RTI. It has been told that till December 2023, Railways earned Rs 1,762.62 crore from ticket cancellation. This message has been shared with verified handles like NCIB Headquarters. However, the Railway Ministry has not yet said anything on this viral message.

On the ‘X’ handle named NCIB Headquarters it is written, Did you know that,
If you book a waiting ticket from IRCTC website and it is not confirmed, then the Railways itself cancels that ticket and a large part of the amount paid by you is deducted as service charge. (For example, if you book a waiting ticket for Rs 240, the Railways refunds only Rs 180 if the ticket is not confirmed.) This means that you have to pay the service charge without getting the benefit of any service. Now you can call it loot of Railways or cooperation of citizens in national development, but Railways is earning thousands of crores every year from it. According to information received from an RTI, in the year 2022-23, Indian Railways earned approximately Rs 2110 crore in the name of ticket cancellation.
