Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), the electric vehicle (EV) business unit of Tata Motors, one of the major automobile companies, has entered into an agreement with Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) to set up EV charging stations. Under this, these charging stations will be installed at about 5,000 fuel pumps of Hindustan Petroleum by the end of this year.

HPCL has more than 21,000 fuel pumps. By installing chargers on these fuel pumps, the company will be able to improve the experience for its customers. This will make it easier for TPEM to expand charging facilities for its EVs. EV sales have increased rapidly in the last few years in the country. TPEM has the first position in this market. It has four EVs in its portfolio – Punch, Tiago, Tigor and Nexon. The company said in a statement, “In collaboration with HPCL, it is also being considered to start an easy system of payment through a co-branded HPCL card.”

Recently Tata Motors launched its first showroom exclusively for EVs in Gurugram. More than 3,000 EV charging stations have been installed at HPCL’s fuel pumps. Last month, Tata Motors had reduced the prices of EV. The company had reduced their prices by Rs 1.20 lakh. The share of EV in total car sales in the country is about two percent. The price of its best-selling Nexon EV has dropped by about 1.4 percent to about Rs 14.5 lakh. The price of its small car Tiago has reduced by Rs 70,000. The price of its base variant will start from Rs 7.99 lakh and the price of Punch EV is around Rs 12 lakh.

Tata Motors had requested the Central Government not to give tax exemption on hybrid cars. Toyota, the leading company in the hybrid car segment, had demanded to reduce the tax on hybrid vehicles. American EV maker Tesla also plans to start business in the country. Due to this, Tata Motors can face tough competition in this segment. Tesla had demanded exemption from import tax from the central government. However, companies like Tata Motors are opposing this exemption.
