Infosys Co-Founder Nandan Nilekani Donates Rs 315 Crore To IIT Bombay, He is Ex Student of Institute

A release regarding this Press release It has been told that the purpose of this donation is to increase the world-class infrastructure in IIT, Bombay, to help in research in emerging areas of technology and engineering and to promote startups related to the tech sector. This is one of the largest donations made by an alumnus in India to this institute. The release quoted Nilekani as saying, “IIT, Bombay has been a major part of my life. It has shaped my formative years and laid the foundation of my journey. I look forward to my 50 years of association with this prestigious institute “Celebrating its completion. I’m grateful to contribute to its future. This donation is a tribute to a place that has given me so much.”

A memorandum of understanding regarding this donation to the institute was signed by Nilekani and Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT, Bombay. The release quoted Choudhary as saying that with this donation the institute will be on the path to becoming a leader at the global level. Earlier, Nilekani had given a grant of Rs 85 crore to the institute.

Shiv Nadar, founder of another big software company HCL, had last year topped the list of the most generous people in the country with an annual donation of Rs 1,161 crore. The daily donation from Nadar was approximately Rs 3 crore. Last year, there were 15 such people in the country who had donated more than Rs 100 crore. Azim Premji of IT company Wipro was at second place in this list. His annual donation was Rs 484 crore. Last year, Jeff Bezos, founder of global e-commerce and tech company Amazon, had said that he was planning to donate a large part of his billion-dollar wealth to charity.
