a media Report Quoting sources, the Igla-S has been purchased to enhance the Army’s Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) capabilities. It is a handheld defense system that can be operated by a single person or crew. Due to this, planes flying at lower altitudes can be shot down. It can also destroy targets like cruise missiles and drones. The Igla-S system consists of a 9M342 missile, a 9P522 launching mechanism, a 9V866-2 mobile test station and a 9F719-2 test set. These components work together to provide a comprehensive air defense solution.
In November last year, India had signed a contract with Russia for 400 missiles and 120 launchers. Its first batch has arrived from Russia. The remaining parts of this contract will be manufactured by an Indian company through transfer of technology from Russia. The Igla-S system is intended for use in the high mountainous areas on the northern border. Sources said that one regiment has received this system and it will be supplied to some others soon. The Request for Proposal (RFP) aimed at enhancing the second-to-none air defense capabilities of the Indian Army was issued about 14 years ago during the tenure of the Congress-led UPA government. Russia’s Rosoboronexport, which manufactured Igla-S, had won the bid for it. It had defeated Mistral manufactured by MBDA of France and RBS 70 NG of Swedish company SAAB for this contract.
This air defense system will replace Igla-1M. Once the existing requirement is met, Indian plans to replace the old Igla systems with advanced laser-beam ranging and infrared VSHORAD. Recently, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) conducted two test flights of indigenous VSHORADS missiles.
