Gadkari, who is in favor of environmentally friendly transportation, has asked automobile companies to develop cars running on alternative fuels. “I will launch Toyota’s Innova running on 100 percent ethanol on August 29,” Gadkari said. This will be the world’s first BS-VI (Stage-II) electrified flex fuel vehicle. Gadkari told that he started taking interest in biofuel in 2004 after the increase in the price of petrol in the country and for this he visited Brazil. He said that a lot of currency spent on petroleum can be saved through biofuel.
Gadkari said, “If we want to become self-reliant, we will have to bring oil import to zero. Rs 16 lakh crore is spent on oil import. This is a big loss for the economy.” Earlier this week, Gadkari had launched the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), a car crash safety test and rating program. India is the fifth country to start such a program after America, Japan, China and South Korea. Its aim is to increase the safety of cars. Automobile companies have welcomed Bharat NCAP.
This will increase the safety of cars in India and will ensure better quality of exported vehicles. Under this, cars will be tested in various ways. These methods are as per Global NCAP. Cars will get safety rating after testing. Under this, safety standards for 3.5 ton motor vehicles will be increased. The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has said that this will make it easier for car buyers to assess the crash safety of motor vehicles available in the automobile market. In this, car makers will be able to voluntarily get their cars tested. Star ratings will be given based on the car’s performance in crash tests.
