Domaraju Gukesh became the youngest player to win the Candidates Chess Tournament, breaking the record held by Russia’s Kasparov.

India’s 17-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh created history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament being played in Toronto and became the youngest challenger for the world title. Now he will face China’s Ding Liren for the World Champion title.

Gukesh drew his last round game against Hikaru Nakamura of America in the tournament final. With this he got nine marks out of 14. He became the second Indian after Vishwanathan Anand to win the Candidates. Five-time world champion Anand had won this tournament in 2014.

Defeated Firozha Alreza of France before the final
Before playing his last match, D Mukesh had taken the lead by defeating Firozha Alireza of France and by scoring 8.5 points out of 13 in the tournament, he was half a point ahead of Nepomniachtchi, Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana of America.

Kasparov won at the age of 22
Russian player Garry Kasparov qualified for the World Championship at the age of 22. He had qualified to challenge compatriot Anatoly Karpov in 1984.
Gukesh said after the victory, ‘I feel very happy. I was watching that exciting game (between Fabio Caruana and Ioan Nepomniachtchi), then I went for a walk with my colleague (Grigory Gajewski), I think it helped.’

Team members who won silver in Asian Games
Gukesh had won the silver medal in the Hangzhou Asian Games in China last year. In 2015, Gukesh became Candidate Master by winning the Under-9 title in the Asian School Chess Championship. Gukesh has won 5 Gold Asian Youth Championships so far. In the year 2019, Gukesh registered a big feat in his name when he became India’s youngest and second youngest Grandmaster in the world.

Vishwanathan Anand congratulated Gukesh
Gukesh also received a cash prize of 88,500 Euros (approximately Rs 78.5 lakh). The total prize money for the candidates was 5,00,000 Euros. Congratulating the young player on Twitter, Vishwanathan Anand wrote, ‘Congratulations to D Gukesh for becoming the youngest challenger. Very proud of what you have achieved. I am personally very proud of how you played and handled difficult situations. enjoy this moment.

Who is D Gukesh?
Gukesh D’s full name is Domaraju Gukesh and he is a resident of Chennai. Gukesh was born on 7 May 2006 in Chennai. He started playing chess at the age of 7. Initially he was coached by Bhaskar. After this, Vishwanathan Anand gave him coaching along with giving him information about the game of chess. Gukesh’s father is a doctor while his mother is a microbiologist by profession.
