Apple faces significant headwinds in the Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter of 2024. Despite a global surge in smartphone shipments, Apple has reported a sharp 19 percent decline in iPhone sales in China, its worst performance since 2020. Due to this recession, the market share decreased from 19.7 percent to 15.7 percent compared to last year, after which Apple has come to third place after Vivo and Honor.

There could be many reasons for the decline in iPhone sales. In particular, the government’s ban on employees using Apple devices has reduced the company’s sales. This strong growth placed Huawei in fourth place in market share and captured 15.5% of the market.

Apart from this, there was a decline due to low demand for Apple devices. Apple had offered discount campaigns and subsidies up to 1,300 yuan (about Rs 15,005) to woo customers in the Chinese market, but despite this, Apple had to struggle to maintain its hold in the market.

Apple is expecting a recovery in sales in the second quarter of 2024. Counterpoint Research experts suggest that there could be a turnaround in iPhone sales due to new color options and better sales initiatives. Apple will now release its upcoming earnings report on May 2, where investors expect to learn more about the company’s strategy to address challenges in China. Apple is facing intense competition and regulatory challenges. Its response in the coming months will reveal how much changes in the world’s largest market.
